National Day 2026

· Singapore · Public holiday

National Day, observed every 9 August, commemorates Singapore's independence from Malaysia in 1965. It is the country's most important secular holiday and the focus of the year's largest civic celebration — the National Day Parade (NDP).

Why 9 August?

On 9 August 1965, Singapore was separated from Malaysia and became an independent and sovereign state. The day is enshrined in the Constitution and gazetted as a public holiday under the Holidays Act.

The National Day Parade

The National Day Parade (NDP) is the centrepiece of Singapore's national-day celebration. It is held annually — alternating between the Padang in the civic district, the Marina Bay Floating Platform, and the National Stadium at Kallang. The parade features the State Flag fly-past, the Red Lions free-fall parachute team, marching contingents from the Singapore Armed Forces and uniformed services, a mass-display performance, and the national fireworks display.

Tickets for NDP are balloted; preview rehearsals (NE Show, National Day Preview) take place in the two weekends preceding 9 August. Selected residents and Singaporean citizens receive an NDP Fun Pack as part of the celebrations.

Singapore Pledge and National Anthem

At 8:22 pm on 9 August, Singaporeans across the country pause for the Singapore Pledge and the singing of the national anthem, Majulah Singapura ('Onward Singapore'), broadcast live from the parade venue. Public ceremonies at community centres and HDB precincts begin slightly earlier so residents can join the moment of unison.

Decorations and festivities

HDB estates and major buildings are decorated with the Singapore flag through July and August. The Esplanade and the Singapore River are dressed in red and white. Selected MRT stations and buses run National Day branding.
