International Museum Day, observed on 18 May each year, celebrates the role museums play in preserving cultural heritage and fostering public education. The 2026 Edit-a-thon in Bangladesh brings together Wikimedia contributors, museum professionals, and the public to improve and expand Wikipedia articles about Bangladeshi museums, cultural institutions, and heritage sites.

Participants work in teams or individually to create new articles, add citations, upload freely licensed photographs, and improve existing content. The event is part of a global movement that runs Edit-a-thons in dozens of countries simultaneously, collectively adding thousands of new museum-related entries to the world's largest free encyclopaedia. It is open to both experienced Wikipedia editors and complete beginners, with mentors on hand throughout the day.
