The Scottish Premiership is the top division of professional football in Scotland, contested by twelve clubs across a home-and-away league format that runs from August through to May. The division has historically been dominated by Celtic and Rangers — the two Glasgow clubs whose rivalry, known as the Old Firm, is one of the most intense in world football — though clubs like Hearts, Hibernian, Aberdeen, and Motherwell regularly challenge for European qualification places.
The 2026–27 season begins in August 2026 and includes the league programme, the Scottish Cup, and the Scottish League Cup. Celtic and Rangers have both used the Premiership as a stepping stone to European competition, and the league's clubs provide a steady stream of players to the Scotland national team and clubs in England's Premier League.
