The J3 League is the third tier of professional football in Japan, sitting beneath the J1 and J2 Leagues in the Japan Football League pyramid. Established in 2014 alongside the expansion of the professional league structure, J3 serves as a development league for clubs aspiring to reach the higher tiers and a competitive home for clubs from across Japan's regional football landscape.

The 2026–27 season begins in August 2026 and runs through to spring 2027 following the split-season format that J.League introduced to align with the FIFA international calendar. The division includes clubs from across Japan including the reserve teams of some J1 clubs, providing a pathway for young players to gain professional experience. Promotion to J2 is the primary objective for the division's leading clubs each season.
